You cannot ‘go to town’ with every release perhaps, but you can always go to Banana Town. It looks like the gorilla from the classic Donkey Kong video game has retired. He’s now living in a mansion filled with bananas, with monkey bodyguards keeping watch outside the main entrance. The charming pixel art visual style should tug at the heartstrings of anyone who grew up with an 8-bit systems, and we had a very good time testing this game at least.

Similar-looking monkeys sell for millions of dollars in the NFT market, at least before the current downturn, but 10,000x your stake is the most you can hope for in Banana Town. It’s not quite up there with Hellcatraz in terms of potential in other words, and this release is all about increasing symbol multipliers. The multipliers become persistent in the bonus round, and there’s plenty of monkey business to be found here.

The low value banana symbols come in different colors, and they pay 2x-3x your stake for 12+ anywhere in view. The premium monkey symbols also pay anywhere, and they award 4x-12x your stake for 12+ matching symbols in view.

There is no wild symbol in this game, but the scatter win system sort of makes up for that.

All winning symbols are removed whenever you land a scatter win, triggering the cascading mechanic. This means that new and/or existing symbols drop down to fill the gaps, and this process repeats indefinitely as long as you keep winning.

Winning symbols are collected by the corresponding meter on the right-hand side, and each symbol type collected doubles the current multiplier up to x64, at best. All multipliers reset to x1 after each cascading sequence in the base game. The big difference from the base game is that the symbol multipliers never reset during the feature.

The nostalgia magic of the 8-bit pixel wrapping can make pretty much any slot more attractive and interesting, and it’s a wonder that this fact hasn’t been exploited more than it has to this day. Banana Town had us charmed from the get-go, but it probably helps having grown up with video games of this graphical quality. The game itself is not a contender for slot of the year perhaps, but it’s still very solid and entertaining stuff through and through.

Basically, what you want is lengthy cascades that build symbol multipliers, and hopefully you will then win with the biggest multipliers you’ve racked up. If not, well, perhaps you’ll bring them with you into the bonus round instead, where they just keep building.

The 10,000x potential seems achievable, but 768x is the most you can win from 12+ symbols multiplied by x64. It’s always exciting to build multipliers though, and Banana Town is a highly playable trip down memory lane.
